Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Monday Week 1 of Advent - November 30, 2020

 MONDAY 30TH NOVEMBER 2020

1ST WEEK OF ADVENT

FEAST OF ST ANDREW THE APOSTLE

Romans 10:9-18

Luke 4:18-22

PREACHERS ARE CALLED AND SENT

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle. He was the elder brother of St Peter and according to tradition, he was one of the first to be called by Jesus to be his apostle. He was formally a disciple of John the Baptist. The gospel reading of today tells us that he was the son of Zebedee, and together with his brother Peter, they were with their father, fishing  in the sea of galilee, when Jesus called them. As people of faith, convinced of the life and mission of Jesus, they left everything including their father and followed Jesus.

Andrew is said to have preached round the Asia minor before he was martyred during the persecution of Emperor Nero where he was crucified on a cross which is in the shape of X. We are told that he continued to preach from the cross for 2 days before he died.

St Paul in the first reading of today, talked about preachers who have been called, chosen and sent by God. It is only when the word of God is preached that people hear it, only when people hear that they can have a change of mind.

As we celebrate St Andrew today, we pray for the grace of God on all genuine preachers of his word. May he continue to bless and sustain them in his love and grant them the grace to persevere in whatever situation or circumstances in which they find themselves. God help us. Amen.
