1 Kings 18:20-39, Matthew 5:17-19
Many of us grew up hearing of one
dreaded shrine or the other, or a powerful native doctor or vudu who you do not
toil with. Many Christians are very much afraid of demonic powers that they do
all they can to avoid those they think are evil.
The story of Elijah and the
prophets of Baal is a very popular one among Christians. There is even a
popular song "God of Elijah send down fire". The story goes a long
way to show that there is no other god apart from God almighty. Christians who
really put their lives in the hands of God like Elijah, have nothing to fear.
The psalmist tells us that these
idols are made of silver and gold, made by human hands.They have mouths but say
nothing, have eyes but see nothing, have ears but hear nothing, have noses but
smell nothing.They have hands but cannot feel, have feet but cannot walk, no
sound comes from their throats (psalm115: 5-7). If you grew up in some fetish
environment, you will come across some elements sacrificed to idols wasting
away on the ground. Some people even end up eating them. St Paul talking about
food sacrificed to idols advised Christians not to eat it because of scandal to
the weak of faith (1 Cor 8). The scriptures therefore warns us not to have
anything to do with worthless gods because those who make and worship them will
end up like them (psalm 115:8).
Elijah therefore proves to us
today that God listens and answers our prayers. He does not sleep nor slumber.
If you are in a difficult situation at the moment and you are considering
looking for help somewhere else or you are already in an ungodly journey,
retrace your steps because the God of Elijah is the same God we worship, and he
will surely send down fire to remedy the situation. God help us. Amen
