Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Monday Week 27 Ordinary time - October 5, 2020

MONDAY 27TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

Galatians 1:6-12, Luke 10:25-37

LOVE HAS NO LIMIT

It is a very virtuous act to see someone in need and we stretch our hands to learn. Jesus in the gospel reading of today tells us that there are only 2 commandments; love of God and love of neighbour. Jesus gives us a parable to teach us the best way to love. Is it possible to see someone you do not know in serious need and you render a helping hand? Many of us help those we know we will get reward from later in life. The samaritan was on a journey he had planned for, but his sight of a man robbed and wounded by bandits brought his compassionate mind to limelight. He stopped his journey and treated the man with his own money. This is what it means to love.

For the Jews, a neighbour is a fellow Jew, not a gentile. Love therefore, breaks all barriers and  considers the other person before him/herself.

Many people may have insulted the samaritan for his sacrifices and generosity towards the man he doesn't even know, but at the end of the day he is referred to as the good samaritan.

This is why St Paul tells us in the first reading  to try and please God and not man. The good samaritan in his actions pleased God and he was happy. We experience more happiness when we love and do what is right. God help us. Amen
