Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Saturday Week 1 of Ordinary Time Year I - January 16, 2021

SATURDAY 1ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1

Hebrews 4:12-16

Mark 2:13-17

JESUS IDENTIFIES WITH US UN OUR WEAKNESSES

Many times we feel that no one understands us in our weaknesses. We think that God is just waiting for us to sin so that he can condemn and punish us. We feel that God hates us so much because of our sins. Some people have already given up on making heaven because they think that God cannot forgive all the atrocities they have committed.

The first reading of today tells us that Jesus is our high priest, he was a man like us, and he knows what it means to be tempted. He knows when we make efforts not to commit sin because he was tempted too.

In the gospel reading, we hear Jesus tell us that he has come so as to take us sinners back to the father. The scribes and pharisees were angry to see him in the house of a tax collector where many sinners were gathered. In his words, it is those who are sick that need physicians, not those who are well. This means therefore that sinners are also the children of God who need salvation. We should therefore not give up on ourselves because of our sins. Jesus is interested in our matter, and he will come and dine with us so as to take us back to God.  May almighty God help us to let go of our evil ways. Amen.
