Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Saturday after Epiphany January 9, 2021

SATURDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

1 John 5:14-21

John 3:22-30

DO NOT LET OTHERS INCITE YOU TO SIN

Sometimes in our lives we get motivated to do evil by those around us. People say things that incite the feeling of jealousy in us. When we get compared with people, we may begin to feel cheated or not good enough.

In the gospel reading of today, we see that the ministry of Jesus has started expanding more than that of John the Baptist. The disciples of John have started leaving him, all those who used to listen to him preach have left him to listen to Jesus a more powerful preacher. John was known as the Baptist, but as soon as Jesus started baptising, many left him for Jesus. As we hear today, the disciples of John and a Jew began to argue why John was no longer getting popular because Jesus had started his ministry.

John was very wise to know that there is no competition in life. God has given everything a gift and a star, and we will all shine in our own way and time. There is no need to compete with anyone, what is yours will definitely come to you. Competition makes us unhappy in the midst of God's blessings and it can lead us to sin.

As St John tells us in the first reading, we should not be the motivation for someone to sin, but admonish and pray for those we see or hear are at the point of doing evil. God help us to recognize our giftedness and use it well. Amen.
